STUDENT WINNERS TO BE HONORED IN WASHINGTON, DC

     Twenty-seven students from public and private schools=20
across the United States have won national recognition in=20
NASA's 17th annual Space Science Student Involvement Program=20
competition.  The students will be honored along with their=20
teachers at the National Space Science Symposium, May 3-7, at=20
the Marriott Hotel at Metro Center, 775 12th St., NW,=20
Washington, DC.

     The competition, co-sponsored by NASA and the National=20
Science Teachers Association, is an interdisciplinary program=20
designed to address the need for greater literacy in the areas=20
of science, critical and creative thinking, mathematics and=20
technology.  Over 10,000 students in elementary, junior high,=20
and high school competed in five competition categories using=20
their skills in mathematics, science, technology, art and=20
creative writing.

     The National Space Science Symposium brings together the=20
27 national winners and their teachers to recognize their=20
academic achievement in an environment designed to further=20
challenge their talents.  The trip to the symposium includes=20
formal presentations of their entries by the students.

     In addition to their recognition in Washington, other=20
awards include opportunities to intern at a NASA field center=20
for a week during the summer, Space Camp scholarships, medals,=20
ribbons and certificates.  Winners of the Interplanetary Art=20
competition will have their artwork displayed at the Marriott=20
Metro Center Hotel during the symposium.  Interested persons=20
can view the display in Salons A, B and C through Tuesday, May=20
6.  After the symposium, artwork will be on display in museums,=20
schools and other public sites throughout this year.

     On Monday, May 5, all events will be open to the press. =20
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. EDT, the national winners of four of the=20
competitions will present their winning proposals in Salons A,B=20
